Teaching kids about good dental health

Dr. Ashley Orynich and the “Tooth Fairy” recently gave an entertaining and interactive presentation, teaching young kids at the Prep School of McKinney about good dental health. The kids learned how to take care of their teeth and gums, and how to make smart choices about the foods they eat and drink. Our goal at Lonestar Kid’s Dentistry (formerly Frisco Kid’s Dentistry) is to assist parents in beginning good oral habits for their children at a very early age. Prevention is our top priority!

We want to help you prevent getting “sugar bugs”, which are cavities, that can sometimes make a hole in your teeth and can hurt. These cavities can be caused by sticky foods… and we don’t want that!

How sugary and sticky snacks affect teeth

We recognize that kids are eating all the time and growing a ton. You want them to have snacks between meals, but try to go a more nutritious route.

With sugary snacks like candy and candy bars, all that sugar will get trapped in between their teeth, or in the grooves of their teeth, which obviously can cause some serious issues with cavities. We recommend snacks that are easily cleaned off the teeth like fresh fruit or yogurt. If you want to do some candy, pick something like chocolate, which can be more easily cleaned off the teeth rather than sticky, gummy candy or hard candies.

Also when we say “sugary snacks” we don’t just mean candy. Snack foods like goldfish, cheese crackers and pretzels, you have to be careful with too. Anything that sticks in, or between the teeth, can cause issues that you might not realize!
