Why Pediatric Sedation Dentistry Matters
Every child is different. Some feel relaxed in the dental chair, while others may experience fear, sensory sensitivities, or difficulty staying still during a dental procedure.
That’s where sedation dentistry becomes a powerful tool. It allows our team to safely perform the necessary treatments while your child remains relaxed, cooperative, and stress-free.
Pediatric dental sedation also helps:
- Children who have difficulty cooperating during treatment get the care they need
- Reduce traumatic memories of dental care
- Make long or complex treatments (like fillings, crowns, or tooth extractions) easier
- Improve the overall dental experience for nervous kids
We consider your child’s medical history, temperament, and treatment needs before recommending any type of sedation. Safety is always our top priority.
Types of Pediatric Dental Sedation We Offer
At Lonestar Kid’s Dentistry, our team is trained in multiple forms of dental sedation to ensure the right fit for your child’s needs. Below are the most common types of sedation we use in our practice.
1. Minimal Sedation (Nitrous Oxide / Laughing Gas)
Best for: Mild anxiety or a strong gag reflex
Level: Your child remains awake, calm, and able to respond
Minimal sedation is one of the most common forms of sedation dentistry for children. With nitrous oxide (often called laughing gas) your child breathes a blend of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a small nose mask. It takes effect quickly and helps your child feel relaxed and secure throughout their dental procedure.
Benefits of minimal sedation include:
- Quick onset and recovery
- Fully awake but less anxious
- Safe and effective for most children
- Can return to school after their sedation appointment
After the procedure, we provide 100% oxygen to flush out the gas so your child feels completely normal before leaving.

2. Moderate Sedation (Oral Conscious Sedation)
Best for: Moderate anxiety or previous difficult dental visits
Level: Drowsy but conscious, may not remember the procedure
Oral sedation involves giving your child an oral medication before their dental appointment. This form of sedation allows them to stay awake but very relaxed. Some kids may even drift off lightly during treatment. Most children won’t remember much about the procedure, which can be helpful if they’ve had negative experiences in the past.
Important things to know:
- Child may feel sleepy or groggy for several hours after
- Should rest at home after the sedation appointment
- Not recommended for returning to school the same day
- Requires a short monitoring period before discharge
Conscious sedation is ideal for children who need help staying calm but don’t require deep sedation.
3. Deep Sedation (IV Sedation)
Best for: Severe anxiety, complex dental surgery, special healthcare needs
Level: Deep sleep, can be awakened if needed
Deep sedation is delivered through intravenous (IV) and induces a deeper level of sleep than oral sedation. This type of procedural sedation is administered by a physician anesthesiologist who comes to our office, ensuring hospital-level safety and monitoring.
During IV sedation, your child:
- Is deeply asleep but still breathing independently
- Will not feel pain or remember the procedure
- Is monitored closely by a licensed sedation team
- May feel groggy or tired the rest of the day
We offer in-office deep sedation so your child can be treated in a familiar environment with our trusted dental professionals, rather than a hospital setting.

FAQs
When administered by trained professionals and monitored properly, sedation dentistry is generally very safe. At all 3 of our Lonestar Kid’s Dentistry locations, we use advanced monitoring equipment throughout the procedure to ensure your child’s well-being. For IV sedation, we partner with an experienced, board-certified physician anesthesiologist who comes to our office to safely administer and monitor the sedation process from start to finish.
Your child’s dental sedation team should have advanced training in pediatric sedation techniques, airway management, and emergency protocols. Look for a practice where sedation is performed by or under the supervision of a board-certified pediatric dentist, with additional support from a licensed physician anesthesiologist for IV sedation cases. It’s also important that the office follows guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and maintains current certification in pediatric advanced life support (PALS).
When sedation is administered at our Lonestar Kid’s Dentistry locations, your child will be closely monitored by trained staff using hospital-grade equipment that continuously tracks heart rate, oxygen levels, blood pressure, and breathing. For IV sedation, a board-certified physician anesthesiologist is present throughout the entire procedure to ensure safety and adjust sedation levels as needed.
How will my child feel after being sedated?
Recovery will depend on the type of sedation used. After sedation with nitrous oxide, most children feel completely normal as soon as the procedure is over. They can resume normal daily activities. Oral sedation may cause drowsiness that lingers throughout the day, and children should rest at home under supervision. IV sedation typically results in deeper sleepiness, and children generally need the rest of the day to recover before returning to normal activities the following day.
