CO2 Laser Dental Procedures
Providing Pediatric Dental Care in Frisco, McKinney, and Prosper, TX
CO2 laser technology allows us to treat soft tissues in the mouth with precision, minimal bleeding, and shorter healing times compared to traditional techniques.
At Lonestar Kid’s Dentistry, we use a carbon dioxide dental laser to perform soft tissue procedures like gingivectomy, frenectomy, tooth exposure, and biopsy. Laser treatment offers a more comfortable experience with less bleeding and a quicker recovery.

What Is a CO2 Laser?
A CO2 laser (carbon dioxide laser) is a type of dental laser that targets soft tissues in the mouth using a precise, concentrated laser beam. It seals blood vessels as it works, which means less swelling, minimal bleeding, and a smoother recovery for your child. In many cases, laser procedures can be done with just local anesthesia.
Procedures We Perform with CO2 Laser
We use this technology for a variety of soft tissue procedures:
Laser Frenectomy
Tongue-tie or lip-tie can affect your child’s ability to nurse, eat, or speak clearly. A laser frenectomy removes the tight tissue using a gentle beam of laser energy—no scalpels, no stitches, and little to no bleeding.
Gingivectomy
A gingivectomy involves removing excess gum tissue to expose more of the tooth surface. This may be done for functional or cosmetic reasons, such as when the gums cover too much of the teeth. Using a CO₂ laser allows for greater precision and minimal bleeding during the procedure. The laser also helps seal blood vessels as it works, which can shorten recovery time and reduce discomfort.
Tooth Exposure for Orthodontics
Sometimes a baby tooth or permanent tooth does not fully erupt on its own. Laser treatment allows us to uncover the tooth so it can move into the correct position, often as part of a larger orthodontic plan.
Biopsy or Treatment for Mouth Sores
If your child has an unusual bump or frequent aphthous ulcers (canker sores), we may recommend a laser biopsy or removal. The CO2 laser treats the area with precision and reduces the risk of infection.

2. Moderate Sedation (Oral Conscious Sedation)
Best for: Moderate anxiety or previous difficult dental visits
Level: Drowsy but conscious, may not remember the procedure
Oral sedation involves giving your child an oral medication before their dental appointment. This form of sedation allows them to stay awake but very relaxed. Some kids may even drift off lightly during treatment. Most children won’t remember much about the procedure, which can be helpful if they’ve had negative experiences in the past.
Important things to know:
- Child may feel sleepy or groggy for several hours after
- Should rest at home after the sedation appointment
- Not recommended for returning to school the same day
- Requires a short monitoring period before discharge
Conscious sedation is ideal for children who need help staying calm but don’t require deep sedation.
3. Deep Sedation (IV Sedation)
Best for: Severe anxiety, complex dental surgery, special healthcare needs
Level: Deep sleep, can be awakened if needed
Deep sedation is delivered through intravenous (IV) and induces a deeper level of sleep than oral sedation. This type of procedural sedation is administered by a physician anesthesiologist who comes to our office, ensuring hospital-level safety and monitoring.
During IV sedation, your child:
- Is deeply asleep but still breathing independently
- Will not feel pain or remember the procedure
- Is monitored closely by a licensed sedation team
- May feel groggy or tired the rest of the day
We offer in-office deep sedation so your child can be treated in a familiar environment with our trusted dental professionals, rather than a hospital setting.
Why We Use a CO2 Laser for Soft Tissue Treatments
Laser dentistry has several benefits for children:
- Minimally invasive with less damage to surrounding soft tissues
- Faster healing and shorter recovery time
- Less discomfort during and after the procedure
- Reduced bleeding thanks to sealed blood vessels
- No stitches required (in most cases)
We know that medical procedures can feel scary for kids and stressful for parents. Using a dental laser helps us make these treatments quicker, calmer, and easier for everyone involved.

FAQs
Laser procedures are generally well tolerated and often more comfortable than traditional methods. The laser seals blood vessels and causes less tissue irritation, which can reduce post-operative discomfort.
Most CO2 laser procedures do not require stitches. The laser cauterizes as it works, which helps control bleeding and promotes faster healing.
Healing is typically faster with laser procedures compared to scalpel-based treatments. Mild soreness or swelling may occur but usually resolves within a few days.
While many laser procedures can be done with local anesthesia alone, we offer dental sedation when appropriate to help children stay relaxed and comfortable.
