Providing Pediatric Dental Care in Frisco, McKinney and Prosper, TX
At Lonestar Kid’s Dentistry, we offer pediatric dental sedation to help children receive dental care safely and comfortably. Whether your child has dental anxiety, special healthcare needs, or requires extensive treatment, our team will recommend the sedation option that best supports a positive dental experience.

How We Choose the Right Sedation for Your Child
Every child has unique needs, and the right sedation option depends on much more than the procedure being performed. Our pediatric dentists evaluate each child individually to determine the level of sedation they believe will provide the safest, most comfortable experience.
Before recommending sedation, we consider your child’s age, medical history, level of anxiety, ability to cooperate, special healthcare needs, and the complexity of the planned treatment.
Our recommendations are based on professional training, clinical experience, and what we believe is in your child’s best interest. The goal is always to help your child receive the care they need safely while creating a positive dental experience that builds trust and confidence for future visits.
Types of Pediatric Dental Sedation We Offer
Our board-certified pediatric dentists maintain the advanced permits, certifications, and continuing education required to safely provide different levels of sedation. This allows us to recommend the level of sedation we believe is safest and most appropriate for your child based on their medical history, anxiety level, treatment needs, and ability to cooperate.
1. Minimal Sedation (Nitrous Oxide / Laughing Gas)
Best for: Mild anxiety or a strong gag reflex.
Level: Your child remains awake, calm, and able to respond.
Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, is the mildest form of dental sedation we offer. Your child breathes a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a small nose mask, helping them feel relaxed throughout their appointment while remaining awake and responsive.
Nitrous oxide is an excellent option for many children, but it is not effective for everyone. Because it works through nasal breathing, children need to breathe comfortably through their nose during treatment. If your child is crying, hyperventilating, has significant allergies or nasal congestion, or has difficulty keeping the nose mask in place, we may recommend another form of sedation that is better suited to their needs.

Benefits of nitrous oxide include:
- Quick onset and recovery
- Reduced anxiety while remaining awake
- Safe and effective for many children
- Most children can return to school after their appointment
After treatment, we administer 100% oxygen to flush the nitrous oxide from your child’s system before they leave the office.
2. Moderate Sedation (Oral Conscious Sedation)
Best for: Moderate anxiety, previous difficult dental visits, or children who need additional relaxation during treatment.
Level: Drowsy but conscious, with little or no memory of the procedure.
Oral conscious sedation involves giving your child medication before their appointment to help them feel deeply relaxed. Although your child remains conscious, many children become sleepy and remember very little about their visit afterward.
Our pediatric dentists maintain the permits, ongoing continuing education, Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification, and safety training required to safely provide this level of care. Not every dental practice offers oral sedation because of these additional requirements.
Throughout treatment, your child is continuously monitored using specialized equipment while our trained team carefully monitors their breathing, heart rate, oxygen levels, and overall comfort.
After oral sedation:
- Your child may feel sleepy for several hours.
- They should rest at home for the remainder of the day.
- Returning to school the same day is generally not recommended.
- Your child will be monitored before being discharged home.
3. Deep Sedation (IV Sedation)
Best for: Severe dental anxiety, complex dental treatment, or children with special healthcare needs.
Level: Deeply asleep throughout treatment.
For children who require a deeper level of sedation, we offer IV sedation in our office with an MD anesthesiologist who specializes in pediatric anesthesia.
During your child’s appointment, the anesthesiologist focuses solely on administering and monitoring your child’s sedation while our pediatric dentist concentrates on providing dental treatment. A dedicated recovery nurse also assists with your child’s care before they are discharged home.
This team-based approach allows your child to receive advanced sedation in the familiar environment of our pediatric dental office while maintaining the highest standards of safety and monitoring.
Following IV sedation:
- Your child will not remember the procedure.
- They will likely feel sleepy for the rest of the day.
- They should rest at home under adult supervision.
- Most children return to their normal routine the following day.
Is Pediatric Dental Sedation Right for Your Child?
Pediatric dental sedation may be recommended if your child:
- Experiences significant dental anxiety
- Has special healthcare or sensory needs
- Has had difficulty completing dental treatment in the past
- Requires multiple procedures during one visit
- Needs extensive dental treatment
If sedation is recommended, it is because our pediatric dentists believe it is the safest and most appropriate option for your child’s individual needs. Our goal is always to provide a positive experience that allows children to receive the care they need while building confidence for future dental visits.

FAQs
For some children, yes. When a child is anxious, unable to cooperate, or needs extensive treatment, sedation can make the experience more comfortable and less stressful. Positive early dental experiences can help children feel more confident about future dental visits.
Nitrous oxide works well for many children, but it is not effective for everyone. Children who are unable to breathe comfortably through their nose, have significant anxiety, or need more extensive treatment may benefit from a different level of sedation. Our pediatric dentists recommend the option they believe will provide the safest and most comfortable experience for your child.
Not necessarily. Sedation is recommended based on your child’s needs at the time of treatment. As children grow, become more comfortable in the dental office, or require less complex treatment, they may no longer need sedation.
